In his famous "Shockingly Simple Math" post, Mr. Money Mustache showed that your savings rate — not your income, not your investment returns — is the dominant factor in how quickly you reach financial independence. Save 50% of your income, and you can retire in about 17 years. Save 10%, and it takes 51 years.

Alistair's Savings Rate Calculator gives you your number — and the timeline it implies.

How Savings Rate Works

Savings rate = (Income - Expenses) / Income

If you earn $100,000 after tax and spend $70,000, you save $30,000. Your savings rate is 30%.

The magic of a high savings rate is that it works from both sides: you're building your portfolio faster AND you need less to live on (so your FI number is smaller).

The Savings Rate to FI Timeline

Assuming 7% real returns and starting from zero:

  • 10% savings rate: ~51 years to FI
  • 20%: ~37 years
  • 30%: ~28 years
  • 40%: ~22 years
  • 50%: ~17 years
  • 60%: ~12 years
  • 70%: ~8.5 years
  • 80%: ~5.5 years

Going from 10% to 20% saves 14 years. Going from 30% to 40% saves 6 years. Going from 60% to 70% saves 3.5 years. The biggest gains come from improving a low savings rate. Once you're above 50%, each additional percentage point matters less.

What the Tool Shows

The microtool takes your monthly after-tax income, monthly expenses, current savings, and expected return — then computes:

  • Your savings rate: As a percentage
  • Annual savings: In dollars
  • Months to FI: Given your current savings, how long until you hit your FI number
  • Savings rate impact: What happens to your timeline if you increase your rate by 5%, 10%, or 15%

Real Numbers: A $96K Earner

  • Monthly after-tax income: $8,000
  • Monthly expenses: $5,000
  • Current savings: $50,000
  • Expected return: 7%

Savings rate: ($8,000 - $5,000) / $8,000 = 37.5%

Annual savings: $36,000 FI number (25 × $60,000 expenses): $1,500,000 Months to FI: ~242 months (~20 years)

If savings rate increases to 50% ($4,000/month expenses): Monthly savings doubles to $4,000. FI number drops to $1,200,000. Months to FI drops to ~162 (~13.5 years). That's 6.5 years of freedom gained by cutting $1,000/month in spending.

The tool identifies what's driving your timeline: is your savings rate already good and you just need time? Or is a low rate making compound growth do all the heavy lifting?

Why Savings Rate Matters More Than Investment Returns

Going from 7% to 8% returns trims about 3 years off a 30-year FI timeline. Going from 20% to 30% savings rate trims 9 years. You can't control the market. You can control your spending. The savings rate lets you focus on what moves the needle.

Alistair calculates your rate and shows you exactly what improving it buys you.

That's what this microtool does. Your savings rate is the number that builds your future.
